‘Urban ecology in Pune – Understanding participatory and Community approaches- A dialogue’

Leaders for Nature India, co-organised a conservation dialogue with Wipro Ltd. at the Wipro Hinjewadi Campus, on 30th September’16, to convene a forum of local organisations who are working on local (urban) ecology projects. The objective was to build awareness on local biodiversity issues and share about the grassroot initiatives to be able to work collaboratively towards solutions.


Two of IUCN’s member organizations, many local conservation organizations (Jeevit Nadi, Ecological Solutions, Ecological Society, Oikos, Vanarai and CEE), employees from Wipro, other businesses like TATA Motors and some IUCN resource persons participated in the workshop and made the event a success. The dialogue completed in four sessions, the first session was the panel discussion with panelists, Dr. Vinita Apte(President TERRE Policy Centre); Dr. V.S. Ghate(Agharkar Research Institute, Pune); Shri Mangesh Dighe(Environment Officer, Pune Municipal Corporation); Dr. Himanshu Kulkarni, (Founder Trustee and Executive Director, ACWADAM, Pune). The second session included presentations by various NGOs about their conservation based work in Pune city. The third session was parallel discussions on two pre-identified themes and the last session included comments from moderators and way forward.

A communication forum for all the participants was created after the workshop, named ‘Pune Biodiversity Alliance’ to take the words of the dialogue forward to implementation.
